Yacht Delivery Deaths Documentary
Tuesday 17 January 2012The BBC have broadcast a documentary about the deaths of five delivery skippers and crew and the loss of three yachts whilst working for Reliance Yacht Management.
The program makes for grim viewing because appears that experienced skippers were put under huge pressure to continue sailing into storms and even to even reroute into them.
The sister of one of the skippers successfully sued Reliance for negligence in September 2010. The judgment of Admiralty Registrar Robert Jervis Kay read “Reliance’s intervention and the pressure put on the skipper were directly causative of the loss of the ship and the lives of the crew.” The deceased skipper was not found to be negligent.
This should be a reminder to all delivery skippers and crew that they should only work with delivery companies that they trust and that they should never sail into danger if the management company tries to force them to. I for one won't be delivering for Reliance.
