A company called Te'havs have created a sailing jacket which has an integrated lifejacket in it. My first thoughts were that this is a great concept and at £100 is good value. The convenience of having the lifejacket attached to the jacket makes this a practical prospect and if it helps lifejackets to be habitually worn I am all for it.
Having said that I can't help wondering if the indivisibility of the components gives the wrong message about when to wear a lifejacket. Does it give the message that a lifejacket does not need to be worn when the weather is warm and dry? Will you also have to equip your boat with additional lifejackets for all the crew incase they do not want to wear a jacket?
On balance I think it is a step forwards for safety.
