Shortest Atlantic Crossing Bid

Tuesday 19 July 2022
Andrew Bidwell is an ameteur sailor that is attempting to get into the record books by sailing across the Atlantic in the smallest yacht. The existing record was set in 1993 when Hugo Vihlen crossed the pond in a boat that was only 1.62 metres long.

Andrew's boat, "Big C", will be considerably shorter than that at just 1.4 metres. The boat is not nearly long enough to lie down in, with short naps being done in the foetal position. It will is devoid of any luxuries (such as a toilet or even toiletpaper) and Andrew will exist on 1,000 calories of cold, dry rations per day.

Andrew will set off from St Johns in Newfoundland and sail the 1,900 miles to Lizard Point in Cornwall. Living in such a small vessel for at least 60 days is surely going to be a challenge, nevermind on the days when the Atlantic will toss the boat around.

We wish Andrew all the best on his passage which will be extreme in every way.
